Basic Lasik Information

Lasik surgery is a corrective surgery which eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses. The procedure, also called PRK, involved using lasers to shape the cornea of the eye in a way that is suited for better vision.

The procedure involved first removing a flap of the corneal tissue. A laser then reshapes the tissue underneath and then replaced the flap covering when the procedure is completed.

After the procedure is complete, most patients are given antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection as well as anti-inflammatory eye drops to reduce inflammation. Patients are also given a pair of dark goggles or sunglasses and directed to avoid bright lights for a certain period of time directed by the doctor.

The efficiency and technology used in these delicate procedures is getting better and better each and every day. The current satisfaction rate of patients is anywhere between 92% and 98% depending on the study.

There are many regulatory agencies that regulate these procedures within the United States. It has been reported that the infection rate of wearing contact lenses is more so than the infection rate from lasik surgery.
